Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in Ireland
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, dramatically increasing oxygen delivery to tissues for accelerated healing and recovery. Ireland has the widest network of HBOT providers of any longevity treatment.
About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing 100% oxygen while inside a pressurised chamber, typically at 1.3 to 3.0 atmospheres absolute (ATA). This dramatically increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in the blood and tissues, promoting angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), reducing inflammation, enhancing stem cell mobilisation, and accelerating wound healing. HBOT has been used medically for decades for conditions such as decompression sickness and non-healing wounds, and is now increasingly recognised for its longevity and performance benefits.
Ireland has an extensive network of HBOT providers, ranging from the national HSE unit at University Hospital Galway to numerous private clinics across Dublin, Kildare, Galway, Limerick, and other counties. Chambers come in two main types: soft shell (monoplace) chambers operating at 1.3-1.5 ATA, and hard shell (multiplace) chambers capable of reaching 2.0-3.0 ATA. Treatment protocols typically involve 10 to 40 sessions depending on the condition being addressed.
Key Benefits
- Dramatically increases oxygen delivery to all body tissues
- Accelerates healing of wounds, injuries, and post-surgical recovery
- Reduces systemic inflammation and supports immune function
- Promotes formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis)
- Enhances stem cell mobilisation from bone marrow
- Shows promise for neurological conditions, Long Covid recovery, and anti-ageing
What to Expect
You will enter a pressurised chamber, which may be a single-person pod or a larger room-sized chamber accommodating multiple people. As the chamber pressurises, you may feel fullness in your ears (similar to an aeroplane descent), which is relieved by swallowing or yawning. You will breathe normally through a mask or the chamber atmosphere. Sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes, during which you can rest, read, or listen to music. Most people find sessions relaxing. A course of 10 to 40 sessions is typically recommended.
