Ozone Therapy in Ireland
Ozone therapy uses medical-grade ozone (O3) to enhance oxygen utilisation, stimulate the immune system, and support the body's natural healing processes. Advanced techniques like the German 10-pass system are available in Ireland.
About Ozone Therapy
Medical ozone therapy involves the therapeutic application of ozone (O3), a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms. When introduced to the body in controlled medical doses, ozone stimulates the immune system, improves oxygen metabolism, reduces oxidative stress (paradoxically, through a controlled oxidative challenge that upregulates antioxidant defences), and has antimicrobial properties. The most common method is Major Autohemotherapy (MAH), where blood is drawn, mixed with ozone, and reinfused. The advanced German 10-pass system performs this process ten times in a single session for more intensive treatment.
In Ireland, ozone therapy is offered by integrative medicine clinics, primarily in Dublin and the west of Ireland. Techniques include MAH/autohemotherapy, rectal insufflation, prolozone (ozone injected into joints with nutrients), and topical application. Some clinics combine ozone with PRP therapy for enhanced regenerative effects. Practitioners are typically doctors trained in integrative or functional medicine who have completed specific ozone therapy certification. While not yet mainstream, ozone therapy has a growing evidence base and patient following in Ireland.
Key Benefits
- Enhances the body's oxygen utilisation and metabolism
- Stimulates and modulates the immune system
- Has antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal properties
- Upregulates the body's own antioxidant defence systems
- Supports joint health when used as prolozone therapy
- May benefit chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions
What to Expect
For MAH (Major Autohemotherapy), approximately 200ml of blood is drawn from your arm, mixed with a precise concentration of medical-grade ozone in a specialised device, and reinfused into your vein. The process takes 30 to 60 minutes for standard MAH, or up to two hours for the 10-pass technique. For rectal insufflation, a small amount of ozone gas is introduced via a catheter, which is painless and takes about 10 minutes. Prolozone injections involve ozone and nutrient injections directly into affected joints. Most patients tolerate all methods well.
