Infrared Sauna in Ireland
Infrared saunas use infrared light to heat the body directly rather than heating the air, enabling a deep, detoxifying sweat at more comfortable temperatures than traditional saunas. They are widely available across Ireland.
About Infrared Sauna
Infrared saunas use far-infrared, mid-infrared, and near-infrared wavelengths to penetrate the skin and heat the body's core directly, unlike traditional saunas that heat the surrounding air. This allows for a deep, profuse sweat at more comfortable ambient temperatures of 38-65C compared to the 80-100C of Finnish saunas. The infrared energy penetrates up to several centimetres into tissue, promoting vasodilation, increased heart rate (mimicking light cardiovascular exercise), and mobilisation of toxins stored in fat tissue.
Ireland has seen a boom in infrared sauna availability, with dedicated studios and wellness centres across Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Galway, Kildare, and other locations. Many facilities offer private suites with full-spectrum infrared technology that combines all three infrared wavelengths for maximum benefit. Sessions are often combined with other recovery modalities such as red light therapy, cold plunges, and compression therapy. Some clinics also incorporate chromotherapy (colour light therapy) into their infrared sauna experience. The lower operating temperature makes infrared saunas accessible to people who find traditional saunas uncomfortably hot.
Key Benefits
- Promotes deep detoxification through profuse sweating
- Supports cardiovascular health by mimicking light exercise
- Reduces muscle tension, joint stiffness, and pain
- Improves circulation and lymphatic drainage
- May support weight management through increased metabolic rate
- More comfortable temperature than traditional saunas, making it accessible to more people
What to Expect
You will enter a private infrared sauna cabin, typically made of cedar or hemlock wood. The cabin is pre-heated and you sit or recline inside wearing minimal clothing or a towel. The temperature is set between 38-60C, which feels comfortably warm rather than intensely hot. You will begin sweating within 10-15 minutes. Sessions typically last 30 to 45 minutes. Many facilities provide water, towels, and shower access. You can listen to music or podcasts during the session. Hydration before and after is important.
